Join Burke parents for a Whiskey Tasting Sign-Up Party

Join us for an evening of Burke community spirit and fine spirits! We will be tasting at least seven different whiskeys from the Virginia Distillery Company. These American Single Malt whiskeys, made from malted barley and fresh spring water in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, have been aged in carefully selected casks to acquire unique flavors and characteristics. Some of these whiskeys are unfiltered, straight from the cask, while others have been bottled for commercial distribution. You won't find them all together anywhere other than at this exclusive tasting available only at the Burke auction. Sample them all, then come back to your favorites while you enjoy the company of fellow Burke supporters and fuel your thirst with provided snacks specially curated by the master distiller to pair well with each whiskey. The distillery will be represented by a brand attaché at the tasting to explain each whiskey and answer questions from attendees. The Virginia Distillery Co. is a woman-owned business located in Lovington, VA, just south of Charlottesville. Their products are the most awarded American Single Malt whiskey. To be considered an American Single Malt, the whiskey must meet strict guidelines including ingredients, process and proofing. The whiskey must be aged in small batch casks smaller than 700 liters.

Leontif: Nobel Prize in Economics, 1973 - A Discussion with Chary Annaberdyev Sign-Up Party

In 1973, an American economist was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for work he did analyzing an economy with many interdependent industries. Student(s) (grades 9 through 12) are invited to have a group conversation about one of the examples of Math application. A brief outline of Leontief's method will be presented. If time permits we will take a look at some prime number related facts as well.

We are planning to have three days (50 min per day) group sessions during the school day at Burke. The schedule will be at commonly accepted dates and times.

Print Photography Class with Allen Jackson

A growing scarcity, Burke’s dark room is where generations of Burke students have learned how to think creatively about composition, subject matter, and storytelling through print photography under the wisdom of one of Burke’s most tenured teachers, Allen Jackson. Allen will guide you through a five-session class where you'll learn the fundamentals of print photography, including how to use your camera, the basics of composition, and how to choose what to shoot. You'll dive into the world of film processing, setting up your darkroom, making contact sheets and beginning to print. You'll also learn how to mat your prints, to create a professional look that will make your photos stand out. By the end of the class, you'll have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of print photography and darkroom printing and be equipped with the skills to create stunning, professional-grade prints.
